Description

Dog’s Mercury (Mercurialis perennis) is a native perennial woodland wildflower that forms dense carpets of rich green foliage. Although its green flowers are small and understated, they appear from March to May and provide early seasonal interest in shaded habitats.

This species thrives in moist, fertile, well-drained soils and grows best in partial to full shade. It naturally occurs in ancient woodlands, coppices, hedgerows, and shaded banks throughout the UK. Therefore, it is an excellent choice for woodland restoration, habitat creation, and conservation projects.

Dog’s Mercury spreads steadily through underground rhizomes, helping to establish a natural woodland ground layer. In addition, its dense foliage provides valuable shelter for insects and other woodland wildlife. It also serves as a strong indicator of long-established ancient woodland habitats.
