Description

Greater Knapweed (Centaurea scabiosa) is a striking native perennial wildflower that produces large, rich purple flower heads from July to September. Its bold blooms and sturdy stems bring height, colour, and structure to wildflower meadows, grasslands, and natural planting schemes.

This species prefers dry, well-drained soils and thrives in full sun. It naturally occurs on chalk grasslands, limestone slopes, roadside verges, and field margins throughout the UK. Consequently, it is an excellent choice for meadow restoration, habitat creation, and conservation projects.

The nectar-rich flowers attract bees, butterflies, hoverflies, and many other pollinating insects during late summer. In addition, the long flowering season provides a dependable food source when many earlier wildflowers have finished blooming. Its distinctive seed heads also add visual interest and support seed-eating birds later in the year.
