Description

Black Knapweed (Centaurea nigra) is a hardy native perennial wildflower that produces rich purple, thistle-like flower heads from June to September. Its long flowering period and upright stems make it a key species for wildflower meadows, grasslands, and pollinator-focused planting schemes.

This species thrives in a wide range of well-drained soils and grows best in full sun. It naturally occurs in hay meadows, roadside verges, field margins, and species-rich grasslands across the UK. Therefore, it is highly suitable for meadow creation, habitat restoration, and conservation projects.

The nectar-rich flowers attract bees, butterflies, hoverflies, and many other pollinating insects throughout the summer. In addition, it provides an important late-season food source when many other wildflowers have finished flowering. Its seed heads also support birds later in the year, adding further ecological value.
