Wood Vetch (Vicia sylvatica) is a graceful native perennial wildflower. That produces long, trailing stems adorned with elegant cascades of white flowers streaked with pale violet from June to August. This climbing species adds height and natural beauty to woodland edges, hedgerows and shaded grassland habitats while supporting a wide range of wildlife.
Naturally occurring in woodlands, hedgebanks, scrub and upland habitats across the UK. Wood Vetch thrives in moist, well-drained soils and grows best in partial shade or full sun where it can scramble through surrounding vegetation. As a member of the pea family, it also helps improve soil health by fixing nitrogen, making it a valuable addition to species-rich planting schemes.
The nectar-rich flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinating insects. While the foliage provides habitat for a variety of invertebrates. Wood Vetch is ideal for woodland restoration, hedgerow planting, habitat creation projects and naturalistic landscaping.
