Description

Melancholy Thistle (Cirsium heterophyllum) is a striking native perennial wildflower that produces large, rich purple flower heads from July to August. Its tall stems and bold blooms add height, colour, and structure to meadows, upland grasslands, and natural planting schemes.

This species thrives in moist, well-drained soils and grows best in full sun or partial shade. It naturally occurs in upland meadows, woodland clearings, damp grasslands, and open hillsides across the UK. As a result, it is an excellent choice for habitat restoration and conservation projects.

The nectar-rich flowers attract bees, butterflies, hoverflies, and other pollinating insects throughout the summer. Additionally, the seed heads provide a valuable food source for birds later in the season. Its tall growth habit also creates shelter for a range of beneficial insects and wildlife.
