Description

Water Plantain (Alisma plantago-aquatica) is a hairless, long-stalked perennial herb with broad, basal leaves. It produces delicate white to lilac flowers that typically open after midday, blooming from late spring into summer. The plant thrives on marshy or muddy soils and along the banks of lakes, streams, and ponds, and is widespread throughout the UK except in northernmost Scotland. Alisma plantago-aquatica provides habitat for aquatic insects and adds texture, structure, and subtle colour to wetland and naturalistic plantings.
