Description

Marsh Dog-Violet (Viola palustris) is a delicate native perennial wildflower that produces pale lilac to soft violet flowers from April to July. Its low-growing habit adds subtle colour to wetlands, bog gardens, and damp woodland planting schemes.

This species thrives in consistently moist, acidic soils and grows best in full sun or partial shade. It naturally occurs in marshes, fens, bogs, wet heaths, and damp woodland across the UK. As a result, it is an excellent choice for wetland restoration, habitat creation, and conservation projects.

The nectar-rich flowers attract bees and other early-season pollinating insects. Additionally, the plant provides an important food source for the caterpillars of several fritillary butterfly species. Its compact growth habit also makes it ideal for establishing species-rich wetland habitats.
