Vervain (Verbena officinalis) is a medium-sized perennial that produces small, delicate lavender flowers from July to September. More common in the south and west of the UK, it thrives in open habitats, including waste ground, roadsides, and disturbed soils. The plant attracts bees and butterflies, supporting pollinators in otherwise sparse environments. Verbena officinalis adds subtle colour and ecological value to naturalistic plantings, meadows, and marginal spaces.
This herb maintained a sacred reputation that dated back to ancient Roman and Druidic traditions. Thus, deep folklore heavily shrouded the plant. Historical herbalists considered it an excellent nervine tonic. They regularly prescribed it to calm frazzled nerves, soothe nervous exhaustion, and ease severe headaches. Furthermore, healers applied the herb topically as an old poultice for minor injuries. They did this because older generations firmly believed the plant possessed protective and deep healing virtues.
