Description

Tansy (Tanacetum vulgare) is a hardy, aromatic perennial in the daisy family. It produces bright yellow flowers in flat-topped clusters from late July to September. Widespread across the UK, Tansy thrives on waste ground, roadsides, hedgerows, and riverbanks. Its aromatic foliage and long-lasting blooms attract bees, hoverflies, and other pollinators, while the plant provides structure and colour to meadows, wild edges, and naturalised habitats.

Historically, older generations classified this brightly flowering plant as a highly potent anthelmintic remedy. Therefore, they used it as a primary tool to expel intestinal parasites and worms from both humans and livestock. Furthermore, because of its pungent oils, historical households relied on the plant as a general pest deterrent. They regularly strewed the leaves across floors to repel insects. Eventually, people also utilized small doses of the herb in traditional springtime tonics to cleanse the system.
