Description

Hedge Garlic (Alliaria petiolata), also known as Garlic Mustard. Is a native biennial wildflower that produces clusters of small white flowers from April to June. Its heart-shaped leaves release a mild garlic scent when crushed, adding seasonal interest to woodland edges, hedgerows, and shaded planting schemes.

This species thrives in moist, well-drained soils and grows best in partial shade or full sun. It naturally occurs in woodlands, hedgerows, roadside verges, and shaded banks across the UK. As a result, it is an excellent choice for woodland restoration, habitat creation, and conservation projects.

The nectar-rich flowers attract bees, hoverflies, and other early-season pollinating insects. Additionally, Hedge Garlic is an important larval food plant for the Orange-tip butterfly, making it a valuable species for supporting native wildlife. Its early flowering period also provides a reliable source of nectar when many other woodland plants are just beginning to bloom.
