Description

Bog Myrtle (Myrica gale) is a small, aromatic deciduous shrub that grows well in wet, acidic soils and damp heathlands. Its slender branches carry glossy, dark green leaves that release a spicy fragrance when crushed. In spring, the plant produces yellowish catkins that attract early pollinators. It forms dense clumps that provide shelter for wildlife and contributes to the structure and biodiversity of bogs and wetlands.

Historically, this strongly aromatic shrub grew in damp peat bogs. Rural communities highly prized the plant for its natural insect-repelling qualities. Therefore, older generations gathered the leaves to brew traditional teas. They used these drinks to control internal parasites and alleviate stomach cramps. Additionally, households frequently placed the fragrant foliage among bedding to ward off fleas. Finally, people used outer bark preparations as a traditional wash to cleanse minor skin irritations.
