Bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) plug plants

Bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) is a low-growing, deciduous shrub that brightens woodland edges and acidic soils. Its delicate green leaves turn reddish in autumn, adding seasonal interest. Small, bell-shaped pinkish-white flowers appear from May to June, attracting pollinators like bees. The plant produces dark blue, edible berries that are rich in antioxidants. Growing up to 50 cm, it thrives in well-drained, acidic soils and prefers partial shade. Bilberry supports wildlife and complements naturalistic planting schemes.

Traditionally, historical practitioners gathered this plant from heaths and moors for various internal conditions. Old herbalists boiled the dried berries and leaves into astringent liquids. Consequently, rural populations relied heavily on these mixtures to treat sudden bouts of diarrhoea and soothe stomach inflammation. Furthermore, the plant held a famous place in wartime folklore. People regularly consumed the berries because they believed the fruit improved night vision, supported eye health, and eased blood vessel discomfort.
