Description

Wood Sage (Teucrium scorodonia) is a tufted perennial herb with aromatic leaves and upright stems. It produces spikes of small, pale yellow flowers that bloom from midsummer into early autumn. Moreover, this resilient plant thrives on dry, sandy soils across the UK and Ireland, often in scrubland, open woodland, and rocky, well-drained sites. Over time, it has also become a popular ornamental, adding texture and subtle colour to gardens while supporting pollinators in natural and cultivated habitats alike.

Despite its name, old herbalists historically used this plant as a substitute for true sage or hops. They favoured its bitter, aromatic qualities for brewing. In traditional folk medicine, practitioners frequently made rustic beers or teas from the leaves. They used these beverages to treat chest colds and break up stubborn mucus. Additionally, the drink reduced the joint pains brought on by rheumatism. Finally, rural homesteads highly valued the herb as a reliable wash to cleanse external wounds and prevent skin infections.
