Description

Water Violet (Hottonia palustris) is a beautiful native aquatic perennial. That produces delicate spikes of pale lilac to white flowers from May to July. Rising gracefully above finely divided underwater foliage, this elegant species adds visual interest while enhancing biodiversity in ponds, ditches, fens and other freshwater habitats.

Naturally found in still or slow-moving water across the UK. Water Violet thrives in shallow water or permanently wet soils in full sun or partial shade. Its submerged foliage provides valuable shelter for aquatic invertebrates and amphibians. Making it an excellent choice for pond creation, wetland restoration and sustainable drainage (SuDS) projects.

The nectar-rich flowers attract bees, hoverflies, and other pollinating insects, while the plant contributes to healthy aquatic ecosystems by creating habitat for a wide range of freshwater wildlife. As a UK native aquatic wildflower, Water Violet is well suited to conservation schemes, ecological landscaping, and natural pond planting.
