Sweet Flag (Acorus calamus) plants

Sweet Flag (Acorus calamus) is a robust marginal perennial. That produces upright, sword-shaped foliage with a distinctive aromatic fragrance. Ideal for ponds, lakes, wetlands and water gardens. It adds height, texture, and year-round interest to aquatic planting schemes while helping to create valuable habitat for wildlife.

Thriving in shallow water and consistently moist soils, Sweet Flag performs best in full sun or partial shade. Its dense clumps of foliage are well suited to pond margins, marshes, ditches and sustainable drainage (SuDS) projects. Where they help soften water edges and provide shelter for amphibians, aquatic invertebrates and other wetland wildlife.

Although grown primarily for its attractive foliage, it produces inconspicuous greenish-yellow flower spikes from June to July. Its vigorous growth and tolerance of wet conditions make it an excellent choice for ecological landscaping, pond creation, wetland restoration and large-scale aquatic planting projects.
