Kidney Vetch (Anthyllis vulneraria) is a colourful native perennial wildflower that produces clusters of bright yellow flowers from May to September. Its soft, silvery foliage and compact growth bring long-lasting colour to wildflower meadows, chalk grasslands, and natural planting schemes.
This species thrives in dry, well-drained, low-fertility soils and grows best in full sun. It naturally occurs on chalk and limestone grasslands, coastal cliffs, sand dunes, and roadside banks across the UK. As a result, it is an excellent choice for meadow creation, habitat restoration, and conservation projects.
The nectar-rich flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinating insects throughout the summer. Additionally, Kidney Vetch is the primary larval food plant of the Small Blue butterfly, making it an essential species for supporting this declining native butterfly. As a member of the pea family, it also fixes nitrogen, helping to improve soil health naturally.
