Our Wet Meadow/Damp Grassland plug plants are provided ready to plant in a wet meadow or a damp grassland habitat. These plants are grown in growing media suitable for the conditions they will be planted in. All our plants are UK native plants and are grown from wild seed. We never use neonicotinoid insecticides, so there is no risk to native insects from our plants.
Habitat:
These plants require areas that stay moist for most of the year, though short dry periods in summer are acceptable. They need open, unshaded locations, ideally in grassland habitats. In wet grasslands, ensure the surrounding grass is not too dominant, as it can smother young plants. They tolerate neutral, slightly acidic, and lime-rich soils, but very acidic or very lime-rich soils may not suit them. Winter flooding is fine if the area is only wet in late spring. Do not plant where grazing or mowing occurs between March and July.
Management:
We recommend first letting these plants flower until July or August, and then cutting and clearing the dead material. Next, cut close to the sward, about 30 mm from the surface. Afterwards, lightly raking helps the plants establish. Additionally, a second cut in October is beneficial. Be aware that you will need to manage weeds for the first 2–3 years after planting. Furthermore, in autumn, wildflower plants may arrive looking past their peak. However, leaf blotches or brown leaves are normal for native plants at certain times of the year. Rest assured, we carefully inspect roots to ensure they are healthy. Finally, once planted, the plugs will recover and grow as expected.
By choosing our products, you support British growers and suppliers who work closely with local farmers and businesses. All our plants are grown from British Seed and raised in Britain. However, be aware that some online sellers import non-native plants and seeds. While these may be cheaper, they are not true UK natives and may not suit our environment.
All our plants are true UK native British wildflowers grown from UK sourced native wild seed. We grow our plants in Peat-free growing media in our sustainable nursery.
