Description

Wild Thyme (Thymus polytrichus) is a low, mat-forming perennial that spreads to create dense, aromatic carpets. It produces tiny pink to purple flowers that attract bees and other pollinators throughout summer. Furthermore, this hardy plant thrives on dry, rocky grasslands, heaths, cliffs, and mountainsides, especially where soils are lime-rich. Its compact growth habit makes it perfect for naturalising in wild gardens, rockeries, or as a fragrant groundcover in open, sunny habitats.

This hardy, low-growing herb served as a cornerstone of traditional cottage medicine across the British Isles. Healers heavily utilized it in historical preparations like honey infusions and syrups. Specifically, they formulated these mixtures to treat raw sore throats, persistent coughs, and deep respiratory infections. Furthermore, because of its strong aromatic vapours, historical healers used the plant as an inhalation remedy to clear congested airways. They also valued it as an early topical antiseptic for minor cuts.
