Description

Wild Marjoram (Origanum vulgare) is a sweetly scented perennial common across much of the UK and Ireland, though rarer in northern Scotland. It grows in sunny, lime-rich grasslands, woodland edges, and roadside banks. From July to September, it produces clusters of pinkish-purple flowers that attract bees and butterflies. Its aromatic leaves resemble oregano and release a pleasant scent when crushed.

This native herb deeply impressed ancient and medieval herbalists. They recognized its intense aromatic oils long before the scientific discovery of microbes. Consequently, traditional healers extensively used the herb for its powerful natural antiseptic, antifungal, and antibacterial properties. Practitioners regularly applied the plant topically to protect open wounds from spoilage. At the same time, they used it as a stimulating rub for aching muscles and brewed it into traditional teas to settle upset stomachs.
