Common name: Amphibious Bistort
Latin name: Persicaria amphibia
Description: Amphibious Bistort grows in the shallow margins of ponds and lakes. The pink flower spikes protrude out of the water along with their long elongated leaves. It is reasonably common across the UK but thrives in slow-flowing freshwater in lowland regions. The plant is good to attract Great crested newts as the adult female lays her eggs on the submerged leaves.
Height: 15-25cm
Flowering time: July to September
Colour: Light pink
Management: Amphibious bistort requires little management but as with all pond plants it would be worth every year cutting back the dead leaves/stem and ocassionally (every 2-3 years) pulling up and dividing the plant rootstock.
